Alex from Flora Northwest had me come out to their worksite on Sauvie Island to photograph their willow harvesting process. The live willow stakes are bundled up and transported to various river banks that are being restored. The stakes are planted along the rivers and streams so their roots may grow and hold the bank together, reducing erosion and restoring habitat. The process they utilize is called pollarding (similar to coppicing). The trees stakes are cut from grow back with a vigor, making it possible to harvest in this location again in a few years.
